Creative cities

The two seminal works about the concept of 'creative city' are 'creative city. toolkits for urban innovators' by Charles Landry and 'the rise of the creative class' by Richard Florida.

Going back to last week's lecture, I found this blog about the free magazine 'Salford Star', written in and about Salford, you know the place where the Smiths took that picture in front of the Lads Club.
The magazine seems to be an excellent inititiative and should be supported and known all over Europe.

the city and the others

For German speakers: Fremde Heimat Deutschland (from Die Zeit, 12.10.2006) potrays the life of many Russian-Germans in the huge blocks in the eastern part of Berlin (Marzahn-Hellersdorf). There is also a photo gallery accompanying the article.

Tomorrow's film will be 'Night on earth'. Here you can read an interview with Jarmush about the film.

the image of the city

'The image of the city' is an interesting short film by Evan Mather, inspired by Kevin Lynch's book with the same title
You can watch it here

Background

This short film is an adaptation of the classic urban design tome - "The Image of the City" - by Associate Professor Kevin Lynch (1918-1984) of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been entitled with degrees from Yale University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and MIT. Professor Lynch has accordingly read a lot of books and is unquestionably smart. His innovative theories, published in seven books set with delicate typography and dozens of articles with crackerjack diagrams, have transformed the lives and visual environments of people in cities from Boston to Buenos Aries.
